Brian Dunning points out some serious flaws in the famous Stanford Prison Experiment, which supposedly showed how good people put in an "evil environment" causes them to become evil. Zeitgeisters take note. Learn how science really works and the value of skepticism.

Decent. I sat through presentations on this matter countless times in college. It was always sold as an amazing experiment showing what can happen to people in extraordinary environments.

As Dunning points out, there are methodological flaws that taint the results. Research on group think and gang psychology, however, generally supports Zimbardo's claim - social environment has a huge effect on how we act.

Of course, so does our individual, genetic persona.

As a side note, I'd like to point out that life was perfectly designed to screw with our heads. Psychology is a bitch for those trying to explain and understand it. As soon as you think you've figured a phenomena or process out - there's a contrary argument waiting to make you look silly. And yet, there are real processes and phenomena to be explained and understood. arg

Yes, the main takeaway here is that human psychology is incredibly complex and nuanced, and not as simple as Zeitgeisters would have you believe.
