Brenton, if I genuinely thought wingnut was an offensive word, I wouldn't use it. It might be offensive in your corner of the world, but it must be a very, very tiny corner. Because I have never, ever heard the term used in a racist way.

Dude, its a type of fucking tree as well. Chinese Wingnut Tree - Pterocarya stenoptera. Are you trolling?

To me you can trace almost all genocidal governments in recent times to the far-left and to socialism because Marx was the first person in modern Europe to advocate political genocide. Granted, the advocacy of it has broadened much further now and Marx cannot be solely blamed, though he can be seen as a source.

Even if Marx was the first to advocate political genocide and movements on the far left did participate in forms of genocide, that doesn't connect extreme right movements in Europe to them at all, any more so than Nazis and Devils on Horseback in Darfur. Straining to make connections between "National Socialism" and the "Socialism" of the USSR are pretty shallow if your basis is genocide and your opinions on where you think political genocide originated from.

I better tell slashdot.org to stop using the word "rooting" because in Australia it means "fucking" and it's vulgar. Australia is on the ass of the world for a reason. It's like Mississippi in the South Pacific/Indian Ocean.

If we're really going to compare what's offensive in our respective cultures, how about excluding people from buying/doing things based on skin color or wearing black face, all being acceptable in Australia, and they're offensive as shit everywhere else.

Australia might be on the ass of the world but it's going to be one of the most powerful countries in the West (if not the world) if it continues to have such a perfect economy, and that means it's culture is going to greatly influence the world instead of the pathetic stereotypes Hollywood created about it. So if you want to go down that path, well, it's simple to answer to that.

It's part of the name of a tree. Bringing up this is diversion from what we're even talking about.

Sky, I've got no idea because I've never seen one before. I know what you're trying to imply so I guess I'll go with diecast wingnut.

I don't care if Australia becomes a world power or not, black face and purchasing restrictions based on race are bullshit. Who said anything about Hollywood? Do you think I live in the US or give a shit about what you say about it?

Don't confuse political correctness with racism there Roxette (RE: blackface) we don't have a guilty conscience. I think that you need to check your facts RE:buying/doing things based on skin colour. It was only partially based on race but it was more to do with their location and the laws of the area. The restrictions were contemplated in order to try and prevent child rape/abuse by people under the influence. At least we don't have a large black, prison population

Wingnut is not racist. It is a name that you give somebody with big ears that stick out as their ears resembles, surprise surprise, wingnuts.

Brenton, what about stuff that's offensive in Japan and China? They have strange cultures that are very specific about what is offensive. What if you said something they found offensive?

Really, Ive never heard the word wingnut to be any racist slur. I have heard it to be used for someone that is crazy, like Alex Jones who has a "few screws loose", hence "wingnut" makes sense. see?

Which is worse wingnut or dingle berry?

I did a urban dictionary on wingnut I don't see anything really close to being racist.

I think the use of any inflammatory terms is pretty horrible. Wingnut in it's "US" meaning is pretty horrid, too. I would never use it.

I guess I just came from a very odd family then. The only person in my entire life until today I'd ever heard use the word "wingnut" was my step father and he was always referring to Chinese people in a racist way. Something that came from his family, and his family alone - I guess.

Seriously Brenton?

Wingnut is just like calling someone a fucking moron. Would you complain about that? I mean sure its offensive, but its not racist, not next level shit.

And how are we to know what is offensive in other countries? Apparently no one else thinks Wingnut means what you think it means where you live. If no one else uses the word that way you cant really expect others to care how you use it unless they go to your country or your house and need to find out your customs so they dont accidentally offend you.

Ideally, yes, we wouldn't call each other fucking morons. Every time I say something unnecessarily offensive to someone it acts as a personal revelation to remind myself how unnecessary it is. This world would be monumentally better, in my mind, if we didn't speak to one another like that.

That's a valid point.

Also, we would lose a valuable word with which to ridicule people with, and you can't tell me ridicule isn't useful.

We're on a board where a bunch of nutbar moonbat conspiracy theorists constantly tell us we're sheeple, brainwashed by HAARP and fluoride and government agents, and accuse innocent people of complicity in mass murders like 9/11. Yet on this board I'm supposed to not use a particular word, which is in general usage in my own country, because of an obscure meaning in a country I don't live in and have never been to because it makes the world a better place.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
