As long as they avoid religion, I believe they might have a lot in common including a complete detachment from reality.

No surprise here.

In another thread, someone characterized the Zeitgeist Movement as "wacky left." But they aren't, really, left-wingers at all. It would be more accurate to describe them as "extreme right wingers stealing the left wing's thunder" -- or, perhaps, "right wing libertarianism for hippies."

Remember, left-wingers favor redistribution of wealth. To that end, a progressive income tax is essential. So too is a stable central banking system. Opposition to these things is fundamentally right wing, it seems to me.

Elsewhere, I've seen the Zeitgeist Movement described as "the Birkenstock Birch Society." I think that's a good nickname for them. Part III of Zeitgeist is, indeed, lifted straight from John Birch Society ideology.

The only thing that's strange here is New Agers embracing "Illuminati"/"New World Order" claims. That's a little like a bunch of Jews believing in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, given how New Agers are vilified in most versions of "Illuminati" grand conspiracy ideology.

@ Diane

Do TZM even fit within the left-right spectrum?

I don't think they fit in the left-right spectrum.

Zeitgeisters believe in 9/11 Truth and banking conspiracies.

A lot of 9/11 Truthers were leftists who hate Bush. A small minority of 9/11 Truthers are right-wingers who want to blame it on Israel. Lots of banking conspiracy believers are tax protesters and Libertarians who hate taxes.

I think it's just a smorgasbord of nuttery without much ideological rhyme or reason. Off the cuff I'd say Fresco is probably a neo-hippie 60s leftist type and Merola is probably a neo-fascist, but that's just speculation, little more than a shot in the dark. Probably they're all too wacky to really characterize.

The best example of ZM politics:

As you can see it really isn't about a specific political extreme so much as a mishmash of extremists.

You're forgetting the Alex Jones fans who make up a significant fraction of the 9/11 Truth movement. Alex Jones is decidedly right wing, at least in his economic views, although he tries to appeal to alienated people across the spectrum. And the "Illuminati"/"New World Order" grand conspiracy ideology which he promotes is derived from right wing sources.

I'd say Alex is more libertarian/anti-government than right wing.

How is Alex Jones not right wing?

His views fit well within the branch of conservatism known as paleo-conservativism. So too do Ron Paul's.

Libertardians claim they aren't rightwing by spewing the tired old "left/right is a false paradigm!" mantra.

But it's garbage. They're firmly on the right.
