Level: 1 CS Original | Today I came across a website claiming that the flat earth myth was a conspiracy spread around to make Christianity look bad in the time of Darwin. In case you're not aware of what I'm talking about, here are some articles about the subject from a non-CT perspective: http://www.discovery.org/a/2587</p> http://www.huffingtonpost.com/matt-j-rossano/starting-a-war-with-a-fla_b_707471.html</p> http://www.asa3.org/ASA/topics/history/1997Russell.html</p> I don't think it's a conspiracy, but I do think it's interesting that Letronne and Irving were in Paris at the same time. I can see how the fabricated story would set off alarm bells, though

Level: 1 CS Original | Thanks, Roxette. However, the details from the articles I posted weren't mentioned there. It turns out Washington Irving is the one who invented the myth, writing in his biography that Columbus set out on his famous voyage in order to disprove a commonly held belief that the earth was flat. The truth is, most people believed that the earth was round in those days. Some Christians think it's a conspiracy by atheists that believed in evolution... to make Christians look less intelligent

Level: 3 CS Original | They were probably just trying to make christians look bad (even if they didn't believe in a flat earth, they were still ignorant back then), hardly a conspiracy, unless if your a Christian fundamentalist, in which case it would be the work of the devil. Another possibility is it is just one of those claims that get spread on the grapevine and changed over time - Kinda like the one about your hair and fingernails growing when your dead - yet are still believed and repeated by lots of people

Level: 1 CS Original | To some people, EVERYTHING is a conspiracy. I think one explanation might be that the other people happened to read Irvine's book, believing it to be a real biography with real facts...which got spread around on the grapevine

Level: 2 CS Original | This seems suspect, it makes more sense to believe that people still think the earth is flat....so does that mean everyone in the flat earth society is out to make Christians look bad???Is Christianity the only religion that could potentially believe in a flat earth??? On a side note I never understood why Christians would even potentially think the earth is flat, I didn't see the verse about a flat earth in my bible :S

Level: 3 CS Original | I meant the people who claimed Christians believed the earth was flat in the past. Flat earthers clearly do believe the earth is flat.
