So, did they solve the problem where geothermal increases earthquakes?

Considering this looks like it was drawn on the back of a gas station invoice, I'm leaning towards "no."

The same guy was asked how to solve the problem of salinity of water to create pure drinkable water and he came up with the following detailed proposal:

Speaking of desalinization, I love GE's commercials on how they're basically desalinization out of goodness of their hearts. They don't mention that they're actually doing it to extract heavy water from the sea, the rest of the clean water they don't need is just a by product. Don't be me wrong, I don't have a problem with extracting heavy water, we do need it, but telling people you're essentially mining for something to be used in nuclear power would be bad, so you have to say you're essentially doing it because you're so great.

I would go with buying an off the shelf solution myself:

Why don't any geothermal advocates ever mention the earthquakes?

What earthquakes ?

Do you mean the ones caused by the drilling sometimes ?

Or the ones they reckon might happen due to fracturing the rock underground that is used with some geothermal solutions ? (Not the powertube..)

I remember reading some research that reckoned geothermal heat extraction might actually reduce the chances of earthquakes!

Its something to be concerned about though, but perhaps not that much in the grand scheme of things, though I can imagine eco-hippy types being all against it, as they seem to be against anything.. (Even found ones against trees!)

How would it reduce them? You're pumping cold water into hot rock; ancient people used that method to crack rocks for mining -- by that logic, their mining methods would have made the rocks stronger or something.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geothermal_power#Electricity :

Demonstration projects are operational in Landau-Pfalz, Germany, and Soultz-sous-Forêts, France, while an earlier effort in Basel, Switzerland was shut down after it triggered earthquakes.

If I remember correctly, the theory is that by cooling the surrounding rock you cause it to move more slowly.

> the project was suspended in 2006 when drilling triggered the quakes.

Drilling, they could have easily been drilling for oil and causing earthquakes!

If they was happening when the plant was operational, that would be another issue..

> to continue, Basel's environmental and economic department said last week.

Perhaps the lesson there is, avoid fault lines..

That's true, I'm not saying that geothermal is out because of earthquakes, but it's something to seriously consider, as you wouldn't be able to use it just anywhere.

I was very shocked to hear about GT energy plants causing tectonic disruption.

IDEA!!!! (very young and open to ideas first, then constructive criticism)

What If we build a similar concept near underwater heat sources?

Earthquake at sea causes little wave.

Little wave gradually becomes bigger wave.

Bigger wave becomes tsunami.

Tsunami wipes out coastal city.

Lots of floating bodies on the news.

Ah.

My idea doesn't have the pipes directly into the underwater rock though.
Just near heat sources.

But then, those are too rare to be really practical :/
